Spending a weekend in the mountains doesn’t have to mean you’re going to spend it at the ski hill.
Sleep in/ Late Brunch
Brunch is one of the staples to a weekend in the mountain, and you’re in luck if the hotel that you’re staying at has a fantastic brunch. Deer Lodge is one of those hotels, with the most delicious french toast I’ve ever had at a brunch buffet, even after the fact that it was brought up to the room by my super-lovely-partner after I was feeling a bit ill from the night before. Not every weekend has to be about having the most epic adventure you can, some of my most memorable weekend datecations have been spent on slow walks, and mornings spent lingering in bed, with a late brunch.
Take an Ice Walk
The ice walk at Johnston Canyon is a completely new way to explore the area – and is a must-do, even if you’ve been there before. It’s a whole new landscape through the winter months, and when you take a tour, you’re able to get a whole new vantage point because you’re touring the area with a local expert.
Bring a pair of ice skates from home, or rent a pair of ice skates, and head out to the pond. It’s less of an effort than skiing, and there’s something about warming up in a hot tub after a skating session on the pond. Don’t leave your swimsuit at home because there are plenty of places to warm up in Banff and Lake Louise, with fantastic hot tubs.
If you’re feeling adventurous and want to hike up the mountain, it’s actually free to ride the gondola down during the winter months. Keep in mind that you’re going to want to have the right gear and footwear to hike up the 5.5K trail, but it’s easily finished in a couple of hours. The trail is covered and snow and ice, but there’s something about being able to say that you hiked the top and rode the gondola down.
